³ H4124 And Moab H3966 was sore H1481 afraid [H8799]   H6440 of H5971 the people H7227 , because they were many H4124 : and Moab H6973 was distressed [H8799]   H6440 because of H1121 the children H3478 of Israel.

⁴ H4124 And Moab H559 said [H8799]   H2205 unto the elders H4080 of Midian H6951 , Now shall this company H3897 lick up [H8762]   H5439 all that are round about H7794 us, as the ox H3897 licketh up [H8800]   H3418 the grass H7704 of the field H1111 . And Balak H1121 the son H6834 of Zippor H4428 was king H4124 of the Moabites H6256 at that time.

⁵ H7971 He sent [H8799]   H4397 messengers H1109 therefore unto Balaam H1121 the son H1160 of Beor H6604 to Pethor H5104 , which is by the river H776 of the land H1121 of the children H5971 of his people H7121 , to call [H8800]   H559 him, saying [H8800]   H5971 , Behold, there is a people H3318 come out [H8804]   H4714 from Egypt H3680 : behold, they cover [H8765]   H5869 the face H776 of the earth H3427 , and they abide [H8802]   H4136 over against me:

⁶ H3212 Come [H8798]   H779 now therefore, I pray thee, curse [H8798]   H5971 me this people H6099 ; for they are too mighty H3201 for me: peradventure I shall prevail [H8799]   H5221 , that we may smite [H8686]   H1644 them, and that I may drive them out [H8762]   H776 of the land H3045 : for I wot [H8804]   H1288 that he whom thou blessest [H8762]   H1288 is blessed [H8794]   H779 , and he whom thou cursest [H8799]   H779 is cursed [H8714]  .

⁷ H2205 And the elders H4124 of Moab H2205 and the elders H4080 of Midian H3212 departed [H8799]   H7081 with the rewards of divination H3027 in their hand H935 ; and they came [H8799]   H1109 unto Balaam H1696 , and spake [H8762]   H1697 unto him the words H1111 of Balak.

⁸ H559 And he said [H8799]   H3885 unto them, Lodge [H8798]   H3915 here this night H7725 , and I will bring H1697 you word H7725 again [H8689]   H3068 , as the LORD H1696 shall speak [H8762]   H8269 unto me: and the princes H4124 of Moab H3427 abode [H8799]   H1109 with Balaam.

⁹ H430 And God H935 came [H8799]   H1109 unto Balaam H559 , and said [H8799]   H582 , What men are these with thee?

¹⁰ H1109 And Balaam H559 said [H8799]   H430 unto God H1111 , Balak H1121 the son H6834 of Zippor H4428 , king H4124 of Moab H7971 , hath sent [H8804]   unto me, saying,

¹¹ H5971 Behold, there is a people H3318 come out [H8802]   H4714 of Egypt H3680 , which covereth [H8762]   H5869 the face H776 of the earth H3212 : come [H8798]   H6895 now, curse [H8798]   H3201 me them; peradventure I shall be able [H8799]   H3898 to overcome [H8736]   H1644 them, and drive them out [H8765]  .

¹² H430 And God H559 said [H8799]   H1109 unto Balaam H3212 , Thou shalt not go [H8799]   H779 with them; thou shalt not curse [H8799]   H5971 the people H1288 : for they are blessed [H8803]  .

¹³ H1109 And Balaam H6965 rose up [H8799]   H1242 in the morning H559 , and said [H8799]   H8269 unto the princes H1111 of Balak H3212 , Get [H8798]   H776 you into your land H3068 : for the LORD H3985 refuseth [H8765]   H5414 to give me leave [H8800]   H1980 to go [H8800]   with you.

¹⁴ H8269 And the princes H4124 of Moab H6965 rose up [H8799]   H935 , and they went [H8799]   H1111 unto Balak H559 , and said [H8799]   H1109 , Balaam H3985 refuseth [H8765]   H1980 to come [H8800]   with us.

¹⁵ H1111 And Balak H7971 sent [H8800]   H3254 yet again [H8686]   H8269 princes H7227 , more H3513 , and more honourable [H8737]   than they.

¹⁶ H935 And they came [H8799]   H1109 to Balaam H559 , and said [H8799]   H559 to him, Thus saith [H8804]   H1111 Balak H1121 the son H6834 of Zippor H4513 , Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder [H8735]   H1980 thee from coming [H8800]   unto me:

¹⁷ H3513 For I will promote H3966 thee unto very H3513 great [H8763]   H3513 honour [H8762]   H6213 , and I will do [H8799]   H559 whatsoever thou sayest [H8799]   H3212 unto me: come [H8798]   H6895 therefore, I pray thee, curse [H8798]   H5971 me this people.

¹⁸ H1109 And Balaam H6030 answered [H8799]   H559 and said [H8799]   H5650 unto the servants H1111 of Balak H1111 , If Balak H5414 would give [H8799]   H1004 me his house H4393 full H3701 of silver H2091 and gold H3201 , I cannot [H8799]   H5674 go beyond [H8800]   H6310 the word H3068 of the LORD H430 my God H6213 , to do [H8800]   H6996 less H1419 or more.

¹⁹ H3427 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry [H8798]   H3915 ye also here this night H3045 , that I may know [H8799]   H3068 what the LORD H1696 will say [H8763]   H3254 unto me more [H8686]  .

²⁰ H430 And God H935 came [H8799]   H1109 unto Balaam H3915 at night H559 , and said [H8799]   H582 unto him, If the men H935 come [H8804]   H7121 to call [H8800]   H6965 thee, rise up [H8798]   H3212 , and go [H8798]   H389 with them; but yet H1697 the word H1696 which I shall say [H8762]   H6213 unto thee, that shalt thou do [H8799]  .

²¹ H1109 And Balaam H6965 rose up [H8799]   H1242 in the morning H2280 , and saddled [H8799]   H860 his ass H3212 , and went [H8799]   H8269 with the princes H4124 of Moab.

²² H430 And God's H639 anger H2734 was kindled [H8799]   H1980 because he went [H8802]   H4397 : and the angel H3068 of the LORD H3320 stood [H8691]   H1870 in the way H7854 for an adversary H7392 against him. Now he was riding [H8802]   H860 upon his ass H8147 , and his two H5288 servants were with him.

²³ H860 And the ass H7200 saw [H8799]   H4397 the angel H3068 of the LORD H5324 standing [H8737]   H1870 in the way H2719 , and his sword H8025 drawn [H8803]   H3027 in his hand H860 : and the ass H5186 turned aside [H8799]   H1870 out of the way H3212 , and went [H8799]   H7704 into the field H1109 : and Balaam H5221 smote [H8686]   H860 the ass H5186 , to turn [H8687]   H1870 her into the way.

²⁴ H4397 But the angel H3068 of the LORD H5975 stood [H8799]   H4934 in a path H3754 of the vineyards H1447 , a wall H1447 being on this side, and a wall on that side.

²⁵ H860 And when the ass H7200 saw [H8799]   H4397 the angel H3068 of the LORD H3905 , she thrust [H8735]   H7023 herself unto the wall H3905 , and crushed [H8799]   H1109 Balaam's H7272 foot H7023 against the wall H5221 : and he smote [H8687]   H3254 her again [H8686]  .

²⁶ H4397 And the angel H3068 of the LORD H5674 went [H8800]   H3254 further [H8686]   H5975 , and stood [H8799]   H6862 in a narrow H4725 place H1870 , where was no way H5186 to turn [H8800]   H3225 either to the right hand H8040 or to the left.

²⁷ H860 And when the ass H7200 saw [H8799]   H4397 the angel H3068 of the LORD H7257 , she fell down [H8799]   H1109 under Balaam H1109 : and Balaam's H639 anger H2734 was kindled [H8799]   H5221 , and he smote [H8686]   H860 the ass H4731 with a staff.

²⁸ H3068 And the LORD H6605 opened [H8799]   H6310 the mouth H860 of the ass H559 , and she said [H8799]   H1109 unto Balaam H6213 , What have I done [H8804]   H5221 unto thee, that thou hast smitten [H8689]   H7969 me these three H7272 times?

²⁹ H1109 And Balaam H559 said [H8799]   H860 unto the ass H5953 , Because thou hast mocked [H8694]   H3863 me: I would H3426 there were H2719 a sword H3027 in mine hand H2026 , for now would I kill [H8804]   thee.

³⁰ H860 And the ass H559 said [H8799]   H1109 unto Balaam H860 , Am not I thine ass H7392 , upon which thou hast ridden [H8804]   H3117 ever since I was thine unto this day H5532 ? was I ever [H8687]   H5532 wont [H8689]   H6213 to do so [H8800]   H559 unto thee? And he said [H8799]  , Nay.

³¹ H3068 Then the LORD H1540 opened [H8762]   H5869 the eyes H1109 of Balaam H7200 , and he saw [H8799]   H4397 the angel H3068 of the LORD H5324 standing [H8737]   H1870 in the way H2719 , and his sword H8025 drawn [H8803]   H3027 in his hand H6915 : and he bowed down [H8799]   H7812 his head, and fell flat [H8691]   H639 on his face.

³² H4397 And the angel H3068 of the LORD H559 said [H8799]   H5221 unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten [H8689]   H860 thine ass H7969 these three H7272 times H3318 ? behold, I went out [H8804]   H7854 to withstand H1870 thee, because thy way H3399 is perverse [H8804]   before me:

³³ H860 And the ass H7200 saw [H8799]   H5186 me, and turned [H8799]   H6440 from me H7969 these three H7272 times H194 : unless H5186 she had turned [H8804]   H6440 from me H2026 , surely now also I had slain [H8804]   H2421 thee, and saved her alive [H8689]  .

³⁴ H1109 And Balaam H559 said [H8799]   H4397 unto the angel H3068 of the LORD H2398 , I have sinned [H8804]   H3045 ; for I knew [H8804]   H5324 not that thou stoodest [H8737]   H1870 in the way H7125 against [H8800]   H7489 me: now therefore, if it displease thee [H8804]   H5869   H7725 , I will get me back again [H8799]  .

³⁵ H4397 And the angel H3068 of the LORD H559 said [H8799]   H1109 unto Balaam H3212 , Go [H8798]   H582 with the men H657 : but only H1697 the word H1696 that I shall speak [H8762]   H1696 unto thee, that thou shalt speak [H8762]   H1109 . So Balaam H3212 went [H8799]   H8269 with the princes H1111 of Balak.

³⁶ H1111 And when Balak H8085 heard [H8799]   H1109 that Balaam H935 was come [H8802]   H3318 , he went out [H8799]   H7125 to meet [H8800]   H5892 him unto a city H4124 of Moab H1366 , which is in the border H769 of Arnon H7097 , which is in the utmost H1366 coast.

³⁷ H1111 And Balak H559 said [H8799]   H1109 unto Balaam H7971 , Did I not earnestly [H8800]   H7971 send [H8804]   H7121 unto thee to call [H8800]   H1980 thee? wherefore camest [H8804]   H3201 thou not unto me? am I not able [H8799]   H552 indeed H3513 to promote thee to honour [H8763]  ?

³⁸ H1109 And Balaam H559 said [H8799]   H1111 unto Balak H935 , Lo, I am come [H8804]   H3201 unto thee: have I now any power [H8799]   H3201 at all [H8800]   H1696 to say [H8763]   H3972 any thing H1697 ? the word H430 that God H7760 putteth [H8799]   H6310 in my mouth H1696 , that shall I speak [H8762]  .

³⁹ H1109 And Balaam H3212 went [H8799]   H1111 with Balak H935 , and they came [H8799]   H2351 unto Kirjathhuzoth H7155  .

⁴⁰ H1111 And Balak H2076 offered [H8799]   H1241 oxen H6629 and sheep H7971 , and sent [H8762]   H1109 to Balaam H8269 , and to the princes that were with him.

⁴¹ H1242 And it came to pass on the morrow H1111 , that Balak H3947 took [H8799]   H1109 Balaam H5927 , and brought him up [H8686]   H1116 into the high places H1120 of Baal H7200 , that thence he might see [H8799]   H7097 the utmost H5971 part of the people.
