² H6438 And the chief H5971 of all the people H7626 , even of all the tribes H3478 of Israel H3320 , presented [H8691]   H6951 themselves in the assembly H5971 of the people H430 of God H702 , four H3967 hundred H505 thousand H376 footmen H7273   H8025 that drew [H8802]   H2719 sword.

³ H1121 (Now the children H1144 of Benjamin H8085 heard [H8799]   H1121 that the children H3478 of Israel H5927 were gone up [H8804]   H4709 to Mizpeh H559 .) Then said [H8799]   H1121 the children H3478 of Israel H1696 , Tell [H8761]   H1961 us, how was [H8738]   H7451 this wickedness?

⁴ H3881 And the Levite H376   H376 , the husband H802 of the woman H7523 that was slain [H8737]   H6030 , answered [H8799]   H559 and said [H8799]   H935 , I came [H8804]   H1390 into Gibeah H1144 that belongeth to Benjamin H6370 , I and my concubine H3885 , to lodge [H8800]  .

⁵ H1167 And the men H1390 of Gibeah H6965 rose [H8799]   H5437 against me, and beset H1004 the house H5437 round about [H8799]   H3915 upon me by night H1819 , and thought [H8765]   H2026 to have slain [H8800]   H6370 me: and my concubine H6031 have they forced [H8765]   H4191 , that she is dead [H8799]  .

⁶ H270 And I took [H8799]   H6370 my concubine H5408 , and cut her in pieces [H8762]   H7971 , and sent [H8762]   H7704 her throughout all the country H5159 of the inheritance H3478 of Israel H6213 : for they have committed [H8804]   H2154 lewdness H5039 and folly H3478 in Israel.

⁷ H1121 Behold, ye are all children H3478 of Israel H3051 ; give [H8798]   H1988 here H1697 your advice H6098 and counsel.

⁸ H5971 And all the people H6965 arose [H8799]   H259 as one H376 man H559 , saying [H8800]   H376 , We will not any H3212 of us go [H8799]   H168 to his tent H376 , neither will we any H5493 of us turn [H8799]   H1004 into his house.

⁹ H1697 But now this shall be the thing H6213 which we will do [H8799]   H1390 to Gibeah H1486 ; we will go up by lot against it;

¹⁰ H3947 And we will take [H8804]   H6235 ten H582 men H3967 of an hundred H7626 throughout all the tribes H3478 of Israel H3967 , and an hundred H505 of a thousand H505 , and a thousand H7233 out of ten thousand H3947 , to fetch [H8800]   H6720 victual H5971 for the people H6213 , that they may do [H8800]   H935 , when they come [H8800]   H1387 to Gibeah H1144 of Benjamin H5039 , according to all the folly H6213 that they have wrought [H8804]   H3478 in Israel.

¹¹ H376 So all the men H3478 of Israel H622 were gathered [H8735]   H5892 against the city H2270 , knit together H259 as one H376 man.

¹² H7626 And the tribes H3478 of Israel H7971 sent [H8799]   H582 men H7626 through all the tribe H1144 of Benjamin H559 , saying [H8800]   H7451 , What wickedness H1961 is this that is done [H8738]   among you?

¹³ H5414 Now therefore deliver [H8798]   H582 us the men H1121 , the children H1100 of Belial H1390 , which are in Gibeah H4191 , that we may put them to death [H8686]   H1197 , and put away [H8762]   H7451 evil H3478 from Israel H1121 . But the children H1144 of Benjamin H14 would [H8804]   H8085 not hearken [H8800]   H6963 to the voice H251 of their brethren H1121 the children H3478 of Israel:

¹⁴ H1121 But the children H1144 of Benjamin H622 gathered themselves together [H8735]   H5892 out of the cities H1390 unto Gibeah H3318 , to go out [H8800]   H4421 to battle H1121 against the children H3478 of Israel.

¹⁵ H1121 And the children H1144 of Benjamin H6485 were numbered [H8691]   H3117 at that time H5892 out of the cities H6242 twenty H8337 and six H505 thousand H376 men H8025 that drew [H8802]   H2719 sword H3427 , beside the inhabitants [H8802]   H1390 of Gibeah H6485 , which were numbered [H8694]   H7651 seven H3967 hundred H977 chosen [H8803]   H376 men.

¹⁶ H5971 Among all this people H7651 there were seven H3967 hundred H977 chosen [H8803]   H376 men H334 lefthanded H3027   H3225   H7049 ; every one could sling [H8802]   H68 stones H8185 at an hair H2398 breadth, and not miss [H8686]  .

¹⁷ H376 And the men H3478 of Israel H1144 , beside Benjamin H6485 , were numbered [H8694]   H702 four H3967 hundred H505 thousand H376 men H8025 that drew [H8802]   H2719 sword H376 : all these were men H4421 of war.

¹⁸ H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H6965 arose [H8799]   H5927 , and went up [H8799]   H1004 to the house H430 of God [H8677]   H1008   H7592 , and asked [H8799]   H430 counsel of God H559 , and said [H8799]   H4310 , Which H5927 of us shall go up [H8799]   H8462 first H4421 to the battle H1121 against the children H1144 of Benjamin H3068 ? And the LORD H559 said [H8799]   H3063 , Judah H8462 shall go up first.

¹⁹ H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H6965 rose up [H8799]   H1242 in the morning H2583 , and encamped [H8799]   H1390 against Gibeah.

²⁰ H376 And the men H3478 of Israel H3318 went out [H8799]   H4421 to battle H1144 against Benjamin H376 ; and the men H3478 of Israel H6186 put themselves in array [H8799]   H4421 to fight H1390 against them at Gibeah.

²¹ H1121 And the children H1144 of Benjamin H3318 came forth [H8799]   H1390 out of Gibeah H7843 , and destroyed down [H8686]   H776 to the ground H3478 of the Israelites H3117 that day H6242 twenty H8147 and two H505 thousand H376 men.

²² H5971 And the people H376 the men H3478 of Israel H2388 encouraged [H8691]   H4421 themselves, and set their battle H3254 again [H8686]   H6186 in array [H8800]   H4725 in the place H6186 where they put themselves in array [H8804]   H7223 the first H3117 day.

²³ H1121 (And the children H3478 of Israel H5927 went up [H8799]   H1058 and wept [H8799]   H6440 before H3068 the LORD H6153 until even H7592 , and asked [H8799]   H3068 counsel of the LORD H559 , saying [H8800]   H5066 , Shall I go up [H8800]   H3254 again [H8686]   H4421 to battle H1121 against the children H1144 of Benjamin H251 my brother H3068 ? And the LORD H559 said [H8799]   H5927 , Go up [H8798]   against him.)

²⁴ H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H7126 came near [H8799]   H1121 against the children H1144 of Benjamin H8145 the second H3117 day.

²⁵ H1144 And Benjamin H3318 went forth [H8799]   H7125 against [H8800]   H1390 them out of Gibeah H8145 the second H3117 day H7843 , and destroyed down [H8686]   H776 to the ground H1121 of the children H3478 of Israel H8083 again eighteen H6240   H505 thousand H376 men H8025 ; all these drew [H8802]   H2719 the sword.

²⁶ H1121 Then all the children H3478 of Israel H5971 , and all the people H5927 , went up [H8799]   H935 , and came [H8799]   H1004 unto the house H430 of God [H8677]   H1008   H1058 , and wept [H8799]   H3427 , and sat [H8799]   H6440 there before H3068 the LORD H6684 , and fasted [H8799]   H3117 that day H6153 until even H5927 , and offered [H8686]   H5930 burnt offerings H8002 and peace offerings H6440 before H3068 the LORD.

²⁷ H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H7592 enquired [H8799]   H3068 of the LORD H727 , (for the ark H1285 of the covenant H430 of God H3117 was there in those days,

²⁸ H6372 And Phinehas H1121 , the son H499 of Eleazar H1121 , the son H175 of Aaron H5975 , stood [H8802]   H6440 before H3117 it in those days H559 ,) saying [H8800]   H3254 , Shall I yet again [H8686]   H3318 go out [H8800]   H4421 to battle H1121 against the children H1144 of Benjamin H251 my brother H2308 , or shall I cease [H8799]   H3068 ? And the LORD H559 said [H8799]   H5927 , Go up [H8798]   H4279 ; for to morrow H5414 I will deliver [H8799]   H3027 them into thine hand.

²⁹ H3478 And Israel H7760 set [H8799]   H693 liers in wait [H8802]   H5439 round about H1390 Gibeah.

³⁰ H1121 And the children H3478 of Israel H5927 went up [H8799]   H1121 against the children H1144 of Benjamin H7992 on the third H3117 day H6186 , and put themselves in array [H8799]   H1390 against Gibeah H6471 , as at other times.

³¹ H1121 And the children H1144 of Benjamin H3318 went out [H8799]   H7125 against [H8800]   H5971 the people H5423 , and were drawn away [H8717]   H5892 from the city H2490 ; and they began [H8686]   H5221 to smite [H8687]   H5971 of the people H2491 , and kill H6471 , as at other times H4546 , in the highways H259 , of which one H5927 goeth up [H8802]   H1004 to the house H430 of God [H8677]   H1008   H259 , and the other H1390 to Gibeah H7704 in the field H7970 , about thirty H376 men H3478 of Israel.

³² H1121 And the children H1144 of Benjamin H559 said [H8799]   H5062 , They are smitten down [H8737]   H6440 before H7223 us, as at the first H1121 . But the children H3478 of Israel H559 said [H8804]   H5127 , Let us flee [H8799]   H5423 , and draw [H8804]   H5892 them from the city H4546 unto the highways.

³³ H376 And all the men H3478 of Israel H6965 rose up [H8804]   H4725 out of their place H6186 , and put themselves in array [H8799]   H1193 at Baaltamar H693 : and the liers in wait [H8802]   H3478 of Israel H1518 came forth [H8688]   H4725 out of their places H4629 , even out of the meadows H1387 of Gibeah.

³⁴ H935 And there came [H8799]   H5048 against H1390 Gibeah H6235 ten H505 thousand H977 chosen [H8803]   H376 men H3478 out of all Israel H4421 , and the battle H3513 was sore [H8804]   H3045 : but they knew [H8804]   H7451 not that evil H5060 was near [H8802]   them.

³⁵ H3068 And the LORD H5062 smote [H8799]   H1144 Benjamin H6440 before H3478 Israel H1121 : and the children H3478 of Israel H7843 destroyed [H8686]   H1145 of the Benjamites H3117 that day H6242 twenty H2568 and five H505 thousand H3967 and an hundred H376 men H8025 : all these drew [H8802]   H2719 the sword.

³⁶ H1121 So the children H1144 of Benjamin H7200 saw [H8799]   H5062 that they were smitten [H8738]   H376 : for the men H3478 of Israel H5414 gave [H8799]   H4725 place H1145 to the Benjamites H982 , because they trusted [H8804]   H693 unto the liers in wait [H8802]   H7760 which they had set [H8804]   H1390 beside Gibeah.

³⁷ H693 And the liers in wait [H8802]   H2363 hasted [H8689]   H6584 , and rushed [H8799]   H1390 upon Gibeah H693 ; and the liers in wait [H8802]   H4900 drew themselves along [H8799]   H5221 , and smote [H8686]   H5892 all the city H6310 with the edge H2719 of the sword.

³⁸ H4150 Now there was an appointed sign H376 between the men H3478 of Israel H5973 and H693 the liers in wait [H8802]   H7235 , that they should make a great [H8685]   H4864 flame H6227 with smoke H5927 rise up [H8687]   H5892 out of the city.

³⁹ H376 And when the men H3478 of Israel H2015 retired [H8799]   H4421 in the battle H1144 , Benjamin H2490 began [H8689]   H5221 to smite [H8687]   H2491 and kill H376 of the men H3478 of Israel H7970 about thirty H376 persons H559 : for they said [H8804]   H5062 , Surely [H8736]   H5062 they are smitten down [H8737]   H6440 before H7223 us, as in the first H4421 battle.

⁴⁰ H4864 But when the flame H2490 began [H8689]   H5927 to arise up [H8800]   H5892 out of the city H5982 with a pillar H6227 of smoke H1145 , the Benjamites H6437 looked [H8799]   H310 behind H3632 them, and, behold, the flame H5892 of the city H5927 ascended up [H8804]   H8064 to heaven.

⁴¹ H376 And when the men H3478 of Israel H2015 turned again [H8804]   H376 , the men H1144 of Benjamin H926 were amazed [H8735]   H7200 : for they saw [H8804]   H7451 that evil H5060 was come [H8804]   upon them.

⁴² H6437 Therefore they turned [H8799]   H6440 their backs before H376 the men H3478 of Israel H1870 unto the way H4057 of the wilderness H4421 ; but the battle H1692 overtook [H8689]   H5892 them; and them which came out of the cities H7843 they destroyed [H8688]   H8432 in the midst of them.

⁴³ H3803 Thus they inclosed [H8765]   H1145 the Benjamites H3803 round about [H8765]   H7291 , and chased [H8689]   H1869 them, and trode them down [H8689]   H4496 with ease H5227 over against H1390 Gibeah H4217 toward the sunrising H8121  .

⁴⁴ H5307 And there fell [H8799]   H1144 of Benjamin H8083 eighteen H6240   H505 thousand H376 men H582 ; all these were men H2428 of valour.

⁴⁵ H6437 And they turned [H8799]   H5127 and fled [H8799]   H4057 toward the wilderness H5553 unto the rock H7417 of Rimmon H5953 : and they gleaned [H8779]   H4546 of them in the highways H2568 five H505 thousand H376 men H1692 ; and pursued [H8686]   H310 hard after H1440 them unto Gidom H5221 , and slew [H8686]   H505 two thousand H376 men of them.

⁴⁶ H5307 So that all which fell [H8802]   H3117 that day H1144 of Benjamin H6242 were twenty H2568 and five H505 thousand H376 men H8025 that drew [H8802]   H2719 the sword H582 ; all these were men H2428 of valour.

⁴⁷ H8337 But six H3967 hundred H376 men H6437 turned [H8799]   H5127 and fled [H8799]   H4057 to the wilderness H5553 unto the rock H7417 Rimmon H3427 , and abode [H8799]   H5553 in the rock H7417 Rimmon H702 four H2320 months.

⁴⁸ H376 And the men H3478 of Israel H7725 turned again [H8804]   H1121 upon the children H1144 of Benjamin H5221 , and smote [H8686]   H6310 them with the edge H2719 of the sword H4974 , as well the men H5892 of every city H5704 , as H929 the beast H4672 , and all that came to hand [H8737]   H7971 : also they set [H8765]   H784 on fire H5892 all the cities H4672 that they came to [H8737]  .
