² H3379 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam H1121 the son H5028 of Nebat H4714 , who was yet in Egypt H8085 , heard [H8800]   H1272 of it, (for he was fled [H8804]   H6440 from the presence H4428 of king H8010 Solomon H3379 , and Jeroboam H3427 dwelt [H8799]   H4714 in Egypt;)

³ H7971 That they sent [H8799]   H7121 and called [H8799]   H3379 him. And Jeroboam H6951 and all the congregation H3478 of Israel H935 came [H8799]   H1696 , and spake [H8762]   H7346 unto Rehoboam H559 , saying [H8800]  ,

⁴ H1 Thy father H7185 made H5923 our yoke H7185 grievous [H8689]   H7186 : now therefore make thou the grievous H5656 service H1 of thy father H3515 , and his heavy H5923 yoke H5414 which he put [H8804]   H7043 upon us, lighter [H8685]   H5647 , and we will serve [H8799]   thee.

⁵ H559 And he said [H8799]   H3212 unto them, Depart [H8798]   H7969 yet for three H3117 days H7725 , then come again [H8798]   H5971 to me. And the people H3212 departed [H8799]  .

⁶ H4428 And king H7346 Rehoboam H3289 consulted [H8735]   H2205 with the old men H5975 , that stood [H8802]   H6440 before H8010 Solomon H1 his father H2416 while he yet lived H559 , and said [H8800]   H3289 , How do ye advise [H8737]   H7725 that I may [H8687]   H1697 answer H5971 this people?

⁷ H1696 And they spake [H8762]   H559 unto him, saying [H8800]   H5650 , If thou wilt be a servant H5971 unto this people H3117 this day H5647 , and wilt serve [H8804]   H6030 them, and answer [H8804]   H1696 them, and speak [H8765]   H2896 good H1697 words H5650 to them, then they will be thy servants H3117 for ever.

⁸ H5800 But he forsook [H8799]   H6098 the counsel H2205 of the old men H3289 , which they had given [H8804]   H3289 him, and consulted [H8735]   H3206 with the young men H1431 that were grown up [H8804]   H5975 with him, and which stood [H8802]   H6440 before him:

⁹ H559 And he said [H8799]   H3289 unto them, What counsel give [H8737]   H7725 ye that we may [H8686]   H1697 answer H5971 this people H1696 , who have spoken [H8765]   H559 to me, saying [H8800]   H7043 , Make H5923 the yoke H1 which thy father H5414 did put [H8804]   H7043 upon us lighter [H8685]  ?

¹⁰ H3206 And the young men H1431 that were grown up [H8804]   H1696 with him spake [H8762]   H559 unto him, saying [H8800]   H559 , Thus shalt thou speak [H8799]   H5971 unto this people H1696 that spake [H8765]   H559 unto thee, saying [H8800]   H1 , Thy father H3513 made H5923 our yoke H3513 heavy [H8689]   H7043 , but make thou it lighter [H8685]   H1696 unto us; thus shalt thou say [H8762]   H6995 unto them, My little H5666 finger shall be thicker [H8804]   H1 than my father's H4975 loins.

¹¹ H1 And now whereas my father H6006 did lade [H8689]   H3515 you with a heavy H5923 yoke H3254 , I will add [H8686]   H5923 to your yoke H1 : my father H3256 hath chastised [H8765]   H7752 you with whips H3256 , but I will chastise [H8762]   H6137 you with scorpions.

¹² H3379 So Jeroboam H5971 and all the people H935 came [H8799]   H7346 to Rehoboam H7992 the third H3117 day H4428 , as the king H1696 had appointed [H8765]   H559 , saying [H8800]   H7725 , Come to me again [H8798]   H7992 the third H3117 day.

¹³ H4428 And the king H6030 answered [H8799]   H5971 the people H7186 roughly H5800 , and forsook [H8799]   H2205 the old men's H6098 counsel H3289 that they gave [H8804]   him;

¹⁴ H1696 And spake [H8762]   H6098 to them after the counsel H3206 of the young men H559 , saying [H8800]   H1 , My father H3513 made H5923 your yoke H3513 heavy [H8689]   H3254 , and I will add [H8686]   H5923 to your yoke H1 : my father H3256 also chastised [H8765]   H7752 you with whips H3256 , but I will chastise [H8762]   H6137 you with scorpions.

¹⁵ H4428 Wherefore the king H8085 hearkened [H8804]   H5971 not unto the people H5438 ; for the cause H3068 was from the LORD H6965 , that he might perform [H8687]   H1697 his saying H3068 , which the LORD H1696 spake [H8765]   H3027 by H281 Ahijah H7888 the Shilonite H3379 unto Jeroboam H1121 the son H5028 of Nebat.

¹⁶ H7725 So [H8686]   H3478 when all Israel H7200 saw [H8799]   H4428 that the king H8085 hearkened [H8804]   H5971 not unto them, the people H1697 answered H4428 the king H559 , saying [H8800]   H2506 , What portion H1732 have we in David H5159 ? neither have we inheritance H1121 in the son H3448 of Jesse H168 : to your tents H3478 , O Israel H7200 : now see [H8798]   H1004 to thine own house H1732 , David H3478 . So Israel H3212 departed [H8799]   H168 unto their tents.

¹⁷ H1121 But as for the children H3478 of Israel H3427 which dwelt [H8802]   H5892 in the cities H3063 of Judah H7346 , Rehoboam H4427 reigned [H8799]   over them.

¹⁸ H4428 Then king H7346 Rehoboam H7971 sent [H8799]   H151 Adoram H4522 , who was over the tribute H3478 ; and all Israel H7275 stoned [H8799]   H68 him with stones H4191 , that he died [H8799]   H4428 . Therefore king H7346 Rehoboam H553 made speed [H8694]   H5927 to get him up [H8800]   H4818 to his chariot H5127 , to flee [H8800]   H3389 to Jerusalem.

¹⁹ H3478 So Israel H6586 rebelled [H8799]   H1004 against the house H1732 of David H3117 unto this day.

²⁰ H3478 And it came to pass, when all Israel H8085 heard [H8800]   H3379 that Jeroboam H7725 was come again [H8804]   H7971 , that they sent [H8799]   H7121 and called [H8799]   H5712 him unto the congregation H4427 , and made him king [H8686]   H3478 over all Israel H310 : there was none that followed H1004 the house H1732 of David H2108 , but H7626 the tribe H3063 of Judah only.

²¹ H7346 And when Rehoboam H935 was come [H8799]   H3389 to Jerusalem H6950 , he assembled [H8686]   H1004 all the house H3063 of Judah H7626 , with the tribe H1144 of Benjamin H3967 , an hundred H8084 and fourscore H505 thousand H977 chosen men [H8803]   H6213 , which were warriors [H8802]   H4421   H3898 , to fight [H8736]   H1004 against the house H3478 of Israel H7725 , to bring H4410 the kingdom H7725 again [H8687]   H7346 to Rehoboam H1121 the son H8010 of Solomon.

²² H1697 But the word H430 of God H8098 came unto Shemaiah H376 the man H430 of God H559 , saying [H8800]  ,

²³ H559 Speak [H8798]   H7346 unto Rehoboam H1121 , the son H8010 of Solomon H4428 , king H3063 of Judah H1004 , and unto all the house H3063 of Judah H1144 and Benjamin H3499 , and to the remnant H5971 of the people H559 , saying [H8800]  ,

²⁴ H559 Thus saith [H8804]   H3068 the LORD H5927 , Ye shall not go up [H8799]   H3898 , nor fight [H8735]   H251 against your brethren H1121 the children H3478 of Israel H7725 : return [H8798]   H376 every man H1004 to his house H1697 ; for this thing H1961 is [H8738]   H8085 from me. They hearkened [H8799]   H1697 therefore to the word H3068 of the LORD H7725 , and returned [H8799]   H3212 to depart [H8800]   H1697 , according to the word H3068 of the LORD.

²⁵ H3379 Then Jeroboam H1129 built [H8799]   H7927 Shechem H2022 in mount H669 Ephraim H3427 , and dwelt [H8799]   H3318 therein; and went out [H8799]   H1129 from thence, and built [H8799]   H6439 Penuel.

²⁶ H3379 And Jeroboam H559 said [H8799]   H3820 in his heart H4467 , Now shall the kingdom H7725 return [H8799]   H1004 to the house H1732 of David:

²⁷ H5971 If this people H5927 go up [H8799]   H6213 to do [H8800]   H2077 sacrifice H1004 in the house H3068 of the LORD H3389 at Jerusalem H3820 , then shall the heart H5971 of this people H7725 turn again [H8804]   H113 unto their lord H7346 , even unto Rehoboam H4428 king H3063 of Judah H2026 , and they shall kill [H8804]   H7725 me, and go again [H8804]   H7346 to Rehoboam H4428 king H3063 of Judah.

²⁸ H4428 Whereupon the king H3289 took counsel [H8735]   H6213 , and made [H8799]   H8147 two H5695 calves H2091 of gold H559 , and said [H8799]   H7227 unto them, It is too much H5927 for you to go up [H8800]   H3389 to Jerusalem H430 : behold thy gods H3478 , O Israel H5927 , which brought thee up [H8689]   H776 out of the land H4714 of Egypt.

²⁹ H7760 And he set [H8799]   H259 the one H1008 in Bethel H259 , and the other H5414 put [H8804]   H1835 he in Dan.

³⁰ H1697 And this thing H2403 became a sin H5971 : for the people H3212 went [H8799]   H6440 to worship before H259 the one H1835 , even unto Dan.

³¹ H6213 And he made [H8799]   H1004 an house H1116 of high places H6213 , and made [H8799]   H3548 priests H7098 of the lowest H5971 of the people H1121 , which were not of the sons H3878 of Levi.

³² H3379 And Jeroboam H6213 ordained [H8799]   H2282 a feast H8066 in the eighth H2320 month H2568 , on the fifteenth H6240   H3117 day H2320 of the month H2282 , like unto the feast H3063 that is in Judah H5927 , and he offered [H8686]   H4196 upon the altar H6213 . So did [H8804]   H1008 he in Bethel H2076 , sacrificing [H8763]   H5695 unto the calves H6213 that he had made [H8804]   H5975 : and he placed [H8689]   H1008 in Bethel H3548 the priests H1116 of the high places H6213 which he had made [H8804]  .

³³ H5927 So he offered [H8686]   H4196 upon the altar H6213 which he had made [H8804]   H1008 in Bethel H2568 the fifteenth H6240   H3117 day H8066 of the eighth H2320 month H2320 , even in the month H908 which he had devised [H8804]   H3820 of his own heart H6213 ; and ordained [H8799]   H2282 a feast H1121 unto the children H3478 of Israel H5927 : and he offered [H8686]   H4196 upon the altar H6999 , and burnt incense [H8687]  .
