In the context of this verse, Jesus was preparing his disciples for the events that would change the course of history: his death, his resurrection, and his ascension. He was filling their hearts with hope and leaving them one of the key elements that they needed to know in order to effectively develop the ministry that would lead them to cause a global impact: asking the Father in his name.
«Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.» (John 16:24)
Asking in the name of Jesus makes a difference in the lives of those who learn its importance.
«Happy are those who know how to use the name, the authority, the statements, the rights of Jesus as an argument with which they support their prayers.»
Jesus is our intercessor before the Father, thanks to his sacrifice on the cross, today our requests can be heard and we have access to the Father through Him, there is no other mediator, only Christ (1 Timothy 2:5).
Prayer in the name of Jesus is the guide we have to receive our blessings, it is the instruction that the Lord left us in his Word. Jesus urges us to ask in his name, knowing that whatever we ask the Father through him, we will receive it.
Now, if Jesus urges us to ask in order to receive, why are there times when the request is not received? James 4:3 says, «When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.»
Many times we do not receive what we are asking for because we are praying in the wrong way.
Clearly God promises to give us what we ask for, but there are things that we ask for that are out of his will; therefore, it is necessary to ask him according to his perfect will that is written in his Word, the Bible. It is there where we find what is best for our lives, and he, who knows our hearts, will be pleased to grant us what he knows is best for us.
So, be encouraged to ask your heavenly Father according to his will in the name of Jesus and prepare to receive the best of the many blessings that he has prepared for you.
Lord, I thank you for the wonderful sacrifice of Christ that gives me access to the Father and every one of his wonderful blessings. Thank you for every answered prayer and for all the things I receive from your hand. Holy Spirit, teach me to pray according to the will of God and always remind me that all my blessings are reserved in Christ. Thank you, Lord, because your thoughts are higher than mine and because what I receive from your hand always goes beyond what my mind can think or imagine. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
